History of the CTU Archive

The idea of establishing a CTU Archive originated in the 1930s with Josef Petřík, a Professor of Geodetics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The CTU Archive was to be a central archive of CTU, collecting/archiving all important documents related to CTU.

However, Petřík´s idea was not realised until 1 August, 1962, when the CTU Archive was set up as a part of the Rectorate. Václav Lomič, a well-known historian, was appointed to be the director. The main purpose of the Archive was to preserve all documents related to the history of  CTU – especially from the troubled WWII years, to collect/preserve the heritage of famous CTU professors and to implement the records management systems, including the discarding of obsolete data. Václav Lomič, František Jílek and Pavla Horská were the co-authors of a two-volume book The History of the Czech Technical University up to 1918.

Between 1980 and 1998, the CTU Archive, as a scientific body of the university, came under the Vice-Rector for Science and the Bursar (kvestor).

After 1998, the CTU Archive again came under the Rectorate, and since 2008 it has had the status of a specialized Archive (as described in the relevant Law on Archives).

The locations occupied by the CTU Archive have included premises in Florenc (Prague 8), and in Evaň (a depository outside of Prague, which is still functioning). Between 1979 and 1985 there was a location in Husova Street in the Old Town district of Prague and, since the late 1980s (1988-89), the Archive has been located on the Dejvice (Prague 6) campus. During 2022 and 2023 a former college heating plant building at Prague's Strahov was adopted for CTU Archive's needs. The Archive has currently air-conditioned depositories, electronic conversion facility and modern environment for visitors.
