Sustainability

Sustainability should not be just a slogan, but a way of life and a commitment to the future of our planet. It is clear that all levels of society are affected by the topic, but how should universities get involved in addressing this issue?

Changes in climate, socio-economic links, and depleting mineral resources are forcing us to change our behaviour and way of thinking. Universities offer the highest possible education and space for innovation and research. They should therefore play a key role in teaching and developing technologies that respond to global challenges. Incorporating elements of sustainability into teaching across disciplines reinforces social responsibility thinking across the board. This will prepare students to address current challenges in their employment and daily lives.

CTU strives to be a good example. By adopting sustainable practices in its operations, it demonstrates the benefits to its students and staff, but also inspires society to think and act boldly.

Last year, CTU participated in the European Sustainability Week (ETUR) with a questionnaire that was sent to all units. More than 84% of student respondents (and 85% of staff) considered it important for the university to engage in sustainability.

In 2022 and 2023, CTU was involved in the inter-university project Unilead I and II. The collaboration of 24 Czech universities resulted in a set of recommendations in key areas of sustainability at universities and tools for developing their own strategies. These projects have also created a unique network of contacts, with most universities choosing to continue to meet and inspire.

CTU established the Office of Sustainability in 2024. Kateřina Klepačová was appointed to head the office by Vice-Rector Kramaříková.

What does a university Sustainability Office do?

We are a team of passionate professionals who are committed to promoting and implementing sustainable practices at our university. The Office of Sustainability serves as a hub for innovative ideas, projects and actions that aim to strengthen sustainability at all levels of the university environment. We strive to create an environment in which education, research, and administration come together to achieve a common goal: to build a better and more sustainable future for our university community and society at large. Our work focuses on diverse areas of sustainability, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using resources efficiently, promoting social justice and engaging students, staff and the wider community in the process of transforming to a more sustainable lifestyle.
