European Centres of Excellence are large research centres which link theoretical and applied research and are therefore able to work on world-class technological  developments. They often also work in collaboration with foreign research institutions. The Centres of Excellence programme funds reconstruction, buildings and equipment for the Centres in relation to a specific research project. The main aim of Centres of Excellence is to cover the extra expenses involved in bringing researchers from the EU countries to spend time here, and to make the Centres accessible and attractive for them. The funding should also be used to cover the costs for post-docs and doctoral students, for workshops, seminars and conferences, and similar events and activities for the specialized public. Funding for the Centres of Excellence is provided by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic.

CTU is the lead institution for two Centres of Excellence and a participant in two other Centres of Excellence.
