Jan Opletal prize awarded to CTU vice-rector Jaroslav Kuba
In the framework of the Students’ Day celebrations on November 17, the Jan Opletal prize for 2007 was awarded to Dr. Ing. Jaroslav Kuba, Ph.D., vice-rector for student affairs and marketing of CTU in Prague. This prize is awarded annually by the Students’ Chamber of the Council of Universities of the Czech Republic to personalities who have made a distinguished contribution to the development of academic self-management, student participation in academic self-management, or defending the rights of students in higher education.
"The Jan Opletal prize is an award not just for my work, but for the
efforts of many fellow workers who have participated in preparing
activities and events, and also for the CTU Students Union, which is
celebrating its 10th anniversary and is the largest organization of its
kind in the Czech Republic.
I am happy if all of us have been able in the course of these 10 years to modernize the Czech universities, at least to some extent, especially in the way people think, and to move the universities in the direction of an open environment, where the university is a centre for new ideas, where it is not the oldest or the strongest personalities that prevail, but the best and boldest thoughts and ideas. The student movement, which I have had the honour to participate in, has played a significant role in these changes. I am therefore grateful to the Students’ Chamber of the Council of Universities of the Czech Republic for noting some of these activities and for honouring them with this award," vice-rector Kuba said when he accepted the award.
