Study Abroad Fair is a fair of noncommercial as well as commercial options of studying abroad. The institutions will present what they offer to the young audience, furthermore Czech students, who have already spent their semester or two abroad, will share with the coming people their experience. Study Abroad Fair is an unique chance to gather information from different institutions in one day under one roof.

The International Student Club is organizing an Orientation Week for 451 new exchange students, beginning on September 12th. All exchange students are advised to participate, in order to settle in before classes begin on September 19th. During this week, international students are introduced to the CTU educational system and are given information for their stay in the Czech Republic. They are helped to register for their courses, they meet Czech and international students, discover Prague during treasure hunt Prague Discovery Game, make some trips, and generally settle in before the semester.

On January 31st Prof. Dr. A Min Tjoa, Visiting Professor at NII had been awarded the honorary doctoral degree (Doctor Honoris causa) of the Czech Technical University in Prague for his scientific contributions in the field of databases, data warehousing, semantic web, and IT-securrity.

A FORUM ON BUILDING DIFFERENTLY
The international forum focused on sustainable architecture and construction was held at the beginning of April in Prague and tried to react on actual topics of limited resources on Earth.
This first forum in the annual series was centred on three key events: a keynote introductory lecture by architect Françoise-Hélène Jourda; an exhibition “Global Award for Sustainable Architecture” produced by the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris; and finally, a Study Day, bringing together the leading European experts in the field.

On Tuesday, February 23rd, the president of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus, visited the Prague 6 city district. His visit included the National Technical Library, on the Dejvice campus of CTU. At 3 p.m., in the Balling Hall on the ground floor of the library, the president met and had a discussion with students of the universities based in Prague 6.

Every year, the Czech Technical University hosts exchange students from all round the world, and this term is no exception. There are 215 newly-arrived exchange students for the summer semester, and they were all welcomed in Prague by the Orientation Week that is traditionally organized by the International Student Club and the CTU International Office.

At a ceremony at the Bethlehem Chapel on January 19th, 2010, a doctorate honoris causa was awarded to Prof. Karen Scrivener, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. Prof. Scrivener is the director and the driving force behind Nanocem, a large consortium that brings together researchers and companies interested in fundamental research on the nanoscience of cement and concrete.

In addition to his distinguished work as an applied mathematician at the Vienna University of Technology, Prof Kaiser has worked extensively in establishing international study opportunities, lifelong learning, teacher education, and European and international dimension to university education in engineering.

Medical studies are soon to start with the MARS scanner, a revolutionary CT scanner developed by the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. The scanner, which incorporates technology developed at the world's leading particle physics research centre, CERN, was recently shipped to research partners in North America. Today a student from Canterbury arrives in North America to use the scanner to study heart disease. This development puts the technology, known as Medipix, firmly on the path to saving lives.

the latest ranking in the Times Higher Education Supplement, the Czech
Technical University in Prague appears in 394th place. This is the
first time that the university has ranked in the Top 400 universities
in the world, out of more than eight thousand universities worldwide.
The best ranked Czech university, Charles University, ranked 229th, and
no other Czech university was placed among the Top 400 universities.

The International Student Club at CTU celebrated the
tenth anniversary of its foundation on October 8th. In just ten years,
ISC has established itself as an internationally known innovator that
has enriched the study stays of large numbers of Erasmus and exchange

The foundation stone for a major new building on the
main Dejvice campus of CTU in Prague was laid on June 30th, 2009, in a
ceremony attended by Prof. Ing. Václav Havlíček, CSc., rector of
the university, by Prof. Ing. Vlastimil Růžička, CSc., deputy Minister
of Education, Youth and Sport, by university managers and
representatives of the construction company and other guests. The new
building is located between the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the new
National Technical Library and the Students’ House, and will provide a
home for the Faculty of Architecture. The new building is the biggest
building investment of CTU in the last 25 years.

The proposal to open a new Faculty of Information
Technology was approved on April 22nd, 2009. The faculty will be
officially opened as from July 1st. It is now accepting applications
for students entering the first year of its bachelor programme. 500
students will be accepted on the basis of their
school-leaving results to enter the faculty in September 2009.
Initially, the faculty will offer only a 3-year bachelor study programme, taught in Czech. Master and doctoral programmes are being prepared. It is expected that study programmes will in due course be offered in English language.

The faculties of CTU recognise the need to keep
reviewing the study programmes. While some students still want to take
traditional engineering programmes, others are looking for programmes
with a more modern approach. The developments in new programmes
summarised below show a shift toward information sciences, risk
engineering and safety systems, medical applications of exact sciences,
nuclear sciences and technologies, and greater emphasis on management.

Series. Prof. Theodor W. Hänsch,

University ranking list on its website (see source below). This year,
for the first time, the Czech Technical University in Prague is ranked
among the top 500 world universities. The current ranking is identified
as 401st to 500th, without further specification. Among the top 500
there are just two Czech universities, the other being Charles
University, which usually ranks in better than 300th position

Student Convention took place at the Czech Technical University in
Prague from February 15th-19th, 2009. The Convention was a part of
official Czech European Presidency Program. The main theme of this
year’s European Student Convention was Student Empowerment through Participation at National, Continental and Global Level.

A group of students from Czech Technical University
in Prague succeeded in applying for participation in SSETI (The
Student Space Exploration and Technology Initiative). The program was
established by a European Space Agency in 2000. The application was
submited with the support of CTU Vice-Rector Jaroslav Kuba. The group
has participated in the project called SWARM.
