National Technical Library will open on CTU Campus on September 9th
The ninth day of the ninth month of 2009 will be an auspicious day,
as it marks the opening of the new National Technical Library on the
Dejvicka campus belonging to the Czech Technical University in Prague
and the Institute of Chemical Technology. The fine new six-floor
building will house over one and a half million volumes and will be a
huge new asset for the universities and for the whole technical and
academic community in the Czech Republic.
The library will bring more people, activities and facilities to the
campus. Apart from the books, there will be extensive computer
facilities, including Wifi and computers for public use. There will
also be exhibition spaces, a café and a bicycle park. The library
anticipates 900 000 visitors per year. The building has six
above-ground floors, and three below the ground.
A special asphalt-based floor covering material that will reduce
noise is used in the building, and there is a mist-spraying fire
extinguishing system aimed at reducing damage to the stock in the event
of a fire. The building is designed to make maximum use of natural
light, natural heat storage and natural ventilation.
The National Technical Library has been designed by Projektil architekti and Helika.
