CTU in Prague improves its international ranking
Czech Technical University in Prague improves its international ranking substantially.
London/Prague October 10, 2009. According to the latest ranking in the Times Higher Education Supplement, the Czech Technical University in Prague appears in 394th place. This is the first time that the university has ranked in the Top 400 universities in the world, out of more than eight thousand universities worldwide. The best ranked Czech university, Charles University, ranked 229th, and no other Czech university was placed among the Top 400 universities.
The THES ranking of technical universities was published at the same time. Here, the Czech Technical University in Prague moved up to 171st place, which is an improvement of more than 50 places on the previous year’s ranking.
“Two years ago, the Czech Technical University introduced a new motivation funding system to support the achievements of its academic staff in research. The system helps significantly to improve our position in international evaluations,” says Professor Václav Havlíček, rector of the University. CTU’s scientific output grew by 19% in the Web of Science database, while the performance of the Czech Republic as a whole improved by 6%. The Czech Technical University evaluates its performance in research centrally, and motivational bonuses are paid directly to researchers. In this way, the best professors and their teams can receive significant bonuses.
In teaching, too, CTU is making a major effort to assure high quality. This year, for example, we carried out a new study of our alumni, in order to find out more about the position in the employment market of graduates in each field of study. The study showed that CTU alumni achieve managerial positions relatively rapidly, and their salaries also rise quite rapidly.
“This year’s results in the international THES rankings are a result of the great work of all our employees and students. The ranking shows that CTU’s strategy of advancing quality both in research and in education, at the expense of quantity, pays off. CTU has been soaring in the international ranks. We believe that we can earn a place in the top 300 in the world soon,” adds vice-rector Jaroslav Kuba.
