In the framework of the Students’ Day celebrations on November 17, the Jan Opletal prize for 2007 was awarded to Dr. Ing. Jaroslav Kuba, Ph.D., vice-rector for student affairs and marketing of CTU in Prague. This prize is awarded annually by the Students’ Chamber of the Council of Universities of the Czech Republic to personalities who have made a distinguished contribution to the development of academic self-management, student participation in academic self-management, or defending the rights of students in higher education.

On Thursday 11th November 2007, Boris Šimák, a dean of Faculty of Electrical Engineering, introduced a presentation of the SITRONICS centre, which was founded in 2005 as a joint project of SITRONICS Telecom Solutions Czech Republic, a.s. (previously STROM telecom, a.s.), developer and producer of wide range of telecommunication network equipment, information systems and technologies, and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

The Times newspaper has today published its yearly QS World University ranking list on its website (see source below). This year, for the first time, the Czech Technical University in Prague is ranked among the top 500 world universities. The current ranking is identified as 401st to 500th, without further specification. Among the top 500 there are just two Czech universities, the other being Charles University, which usually ranks in better than 300th position (currently at 261). In a specialized ranking on Technology universities published in the QS World University 2008 ranking list, the Czech Technical University in Prague was the top university in the Czech Republic ranked at 228. The only other Czech university to make the list was Charles University ranked at 288.

A group of students from the Czech Technical University in Prague succeeded in applying for participation in SSETI (The Student Space Exploration and Technology Initiative). The program was established by a European Space Agency in 2000. The application was submitted with the support of CTU Vice-Rector Jaroslav Kuba. The group has participated in the project called SWARM.

The faculties of the university recognise the need to keep reviewing the study programmes that they offer. While some students still want to take traditional engineering programmes, others are looking for programmes with a more modern approach. The developments in new programmes summarised below show a shift toward information sciences, risk engineering and safety systems, medical applications of exact sciences, nuclear sciences and technologies, and greater emphasis on management.

Geneva, 14 December 2009 Medical studies are soon to start with the MARS scanner, a revolutionary CT scanner developed by the University of Canterbury[1], New Zealand. The scanner, which incorporates technology developed at the world's leading particle physics research centre, CERN[2], was recently shipped to research partners in North America. Today a student from Canterbury arrives in North America to use the scanner to study heart disease. This development puts the technology, known as Medipix[3], firmly on the path to saving lives.
