Czech Culture Course

Write down the name of the course in your Study Record Book and I will sign it in the last week of the semester if you fullfill the course requirements.

Requirements: final project, 50 % attendance

Please note that a FAIL GRADE will be given if the essay is not your own work.

The Czech Culture Course (CCC) is organized specifically for the international students of the Czech Technical University in Prague. It is an accredited course of two lecture hours per week, twelve lectures per semester.

Note that CTU awards credits for this course, but it is your home university that recognizes credits. Make sure that your home university will award credit. The aim of the course is to give a broad overview of the past and present situation in the Czech Republic including history, economy, political system and institutions, culture and art, social life, architecture, technological achievements.The lectures are complemented by visits and trips to cultural and architectural sites, factories, breweries, museums, etc. At the end of the course students present a project (see attached information) of 2 000 to 4 000 words either in written, oral or multimedia form.

The titles of the lectures are (dates and the order will be updated soon):

  • Customs in the Czech Republic: Customs and habits of Czech people, what to expect when you meet them, visit their homes and families.

  • History of the Czech Republic: Czech Intelligentsia and its role in Czech History;
    Lecturer - Dr. Jana Bischofova
    Note: The aim of the lecture is to introduce the most important events and personalities in Czech history, so that the students will understand some specific aspects in the development of the Czech State.

  • Main personalities in Czech Literature of the 20th century
    Lecturer - Dr. Jana Bischofova
    Note: Lives and books of Milan Kundera, Karel Capek etc.

  • Czech movie – you will watch a Czech movie. YOU CAN VOTE HERE - there is more information about the movies too.

  • Visit to Museum of Prague - The topic of this lecture will be architecture styles and the disapeared face of Prague. Lecture will be held in the City museum of Prague. Discover countless ancient jewels of Prague building and art history. Main aspects of Prague architecture and urban form will be discussed on massive paper model of old Prague from early 19th century. A 3D virtual tour through city's disapeared streets and squares will be conducted. This visit will make you more sensitive to patterns and change in city's development history

  • Review of the history of Prague from an architectural point of view
    Lecturer - Ing. Arch. Matej Kamenicky
    The focus of the lecture is to know the roots of city's urban form to understand it in present time. Lecture will be a loose continuation of the museum visit. The topic of this lecture will be main development phases of Prague, architectural history and problems of present development. Expetional architectural designs of Prague will be presented. Learn what stands in the core of Prague's allure, exeptional aspects of its architecture and why people used to say "Praga mater urbium".

  • Czech economy before and after 1989
    Lecturer - Doc. Ing. Helena Fialova
    Note: The lecture is given by Doc. Fialova, a specialist in economics.The lecture is followed by a discussion on the present situation and the problems and issues in the economy of the country.The lecture focuses on the European Union and the Czech Republic.

  • Guided tour at the National Gallery
    1st. half of 20th century.
    The exhibition presents the work of leading artists in Czech fine art in monographic profiles or in a selection of key works, along with the work of foreign artists. The image of the period is complemented with examples of architecture, furniture, the applied arts, fashion, design and stage design. You will also find photographs, drawings and prints

  • Czech economy - the contemporary macroeconomic situation

  • Democracy in the Czech Republic Today
    Lecturer - Mgr. Marek Skovajsa
    Note: This lecture will focus on the development of Czech democratic political system after 1989. The topics discussed include impact of communism on the new Czech democracy, major political affairs and public controversies, electoral system, and political attitudes of the general public

      About 1/3 should relate to your specialization as a student in CTU. You may also include personal reflections on being a "visiting student". (being a student at CTU-academic)

      1/3 should be based on your lectures of the Czech Culture Course giving your own opinion and critique. (feedback for Czech Culture Course)

      1/3 should include your personal reflections of being a student at CTU. (being a student at CTU-cultural)

      The work may be presented in Czech, Slovak, English, French, German, Greek, Spanish, Finnish or Russian.

      ECTS Credits - 3 for MSOE and UC.

      ECTS Credits -  2 for the rest of Exchange & ERASMUS students.

      Write between 2 000 and 4 000 words. Multimedia presentation is welcome (include professional quality sketches, paintings, photographs, videos, etc.). Oral presentation about 20 minutes.

      Negotiate with Sasha Spurna, the coordinator or Tassula Healey, the assessor, if you want to present mainly in non-written form (e.g., Power Point presentation max. in group of 3 students)

      You may include work presented for other credit courses, but you must acknowledge this fact and also present substantial other work. If you present an essay that is not your own work (that has been downloaded) you will fail the course and your home university will be informed. All quotations from other sources must be acknowledged. Make sure you do not miss the deadline!
